Operation to remove 12 stone tumour begins

Surgeons have begun a marathon operation to remove a 12 stone tumour from a Romanian woman. The operation on Lucica Bunghez, 46, from Brasov, is expected to take an 11-strong team of doctors 20 hours to complete. It went ahead after the Discovery Channel agreed to foot the £250,000 cost of the operation in exchange for the film rights. Mrs Bunghez is being operated on by Romanian and US doctors at Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest.
"In the second stage we have to cover the hole that will be left when the tumour is removed. Almost 35 to 40 percent of Ms Bunghez's body will have to be covered. Initially we'll use a skin substitute to cover it and after that we will have to perform skin transplants."
